Character concept for Richard Byers new serialized story “Astarte” (for Heavy Metal Magazine). The story revolves around an angel who is sent to Hell on a special mission but finds her greatest struggle is to maintain her divine identity while submersed in the excesses and perversions of the underworld. I had great reference and used my “window” technique of creating dozens of individual masks (in Photoshop) and painting behind them on multiple layers per mask. It’s almost like assembling a 3D skin, really. I blend all the pieces together in Painter to give it smoothness and consistency. Time: 2weeks.
